Emergency service workers are crediting a good Samaritan's feat of strength in the rescue of a driver trapped inside a burning vehicle.
Robert Renning was driving on a highway in Minnesota on Monday evening when he noticed a car on fire nearby. Renning managed to flag the driver, Michael Johannes, and convinced him to pull over.
“I could see the flames coming out from underneath the car on the way back,” Renning told CBS.
According to Johannes, his 2006 Chevy Trailblazer was malfunctioning, rendering the man trapped inside since the locks and power windows were non-responsive.
“The taillights started flashing without control, the brakes stopped working, the speed calculator went to zero, the electronics just got messed up.” Johannes told ABC news.
Johannes, for his part, tried kicking the windows out from the inside but smoke was quickly filling in the car interior.
That's when Renning leaped into action with his bare hands, bent the door frame enough for the window to crack, and then managed to pull Johannes out of the fiery wreck.
"He bent the door with his bare hands.That was him. It was no tool," said Johannes. "It shattered the glass and they were able to pull me out," said Johannes in an interview with USA Today.
Johannes suffered some minor cuts from the glass but was otherwise fine. Renning, meanwhile was unharmed in the from the incident. Minnesota State police has nominated Renning for a Good Samaritan award, but Renning insist he was just in the right place at the right time.
“I didn’t do anything anyone else wouldn't have done at the time. It was all timing,”
