The potato salad Kickstarter bubble has burst.
But not to worry -- Zack Danger Brown still has far more than enough to make his potato salad.
After reaching more than $70,000 on Wednesday, the Columbus, Ohio, man’s Kickstarter campaign lost some $30,000 overnight.
It’s unclear why, but the likely reason is buyer’s remorse. Kickstarter allows donors to take back their pledge so long as the campaign hasn’t closed.
This Kickstarter has been one mother of a roller coaster. The campaign started with the goal of raising $10 to make a potato salad. By Monday afternoon, it had reached nearly $9,000, and with media reports proliferating this week, the project’s fundraising turned parabolic, reaching some $70,000 by Wednesday night.
That is a classic bubble pattern. Bubble-watchers will tell you the correction was inevitable.
But Brown’s potato salad project isn’t dead; it’s still some $40,000 above its stated goal of $10. And Kicktraq is projecting the project is on target to raise some $170,000 before it closes Aug. 2, even after accounting for the drop. But that forecast could change quickly.
All the same, Brown's promise to hold a potato salad party sometime around the Labour Day weekend is in no, ahem, danger. At least not yet.
