The Pemberton Music Festival will go on as planned, while the RCMP continues to investigate the death of a 21-year-old attendee, organizers said in a press release.
The RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is probing Friday's 'suspicious death' of Regina resident Nick Phongsavath on the festival's campgrounds, 30 kilometres northeast of Whistler, B.C.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred on July 18 in the Pemberton Music Festival campgrounds," the release states. "Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to Mr. Phongsavath’s friends and family."
The release also notes that the "RCMP are confident that this was an isolated incident and that the festival site is safe and well organized."
"With the support of the RCMP, we will continue with the Pemberton Music Festival."
The festival, which was resurrected after a lengthy hiatus, features nearly 100 bands with thousands of people attending. The concert series will conclude on Sunday, with performances from Outkast, Frank Ocean, Modest Mouse, St. Vincent, and Matthew Good, among others.
The new organizers from New Orleans spent millions on improvements after the last Pemberton Music Festival in 2008 was marred by traffic jams, irritating dust and filthy portable toilets.
