Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk says he is resigning.
Yatsenyuk made the announcement after two parties said they would pull out of the governing coalition, the Associated Press reports.
The Udar party led by former boxer Vitali Klitschko and the nationalist Svoboda party withdrew from the coalition that assumed power after former President Viktor Yanukovich was ousted by protesters seeking closer ties with the European Union, The New York Times reports.
Yatsenyuk's resignation gives Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko the go-ahead to announce fresh elections.
Poroshenko said that the lawmakers' actions were prompted by a recognition of the demand of the Ukrainian people to bring new politicians to power, Al-Jazeera reports.
"All public opinion polls, as well as direct contact with people, shows that the public wants a complete overhaul of those in power," Poroshenko said in a statement.
The country faces the likelihood of an election as Ukrainian forces are battling to end the separatist insurrection that has been raging in the east of the country. Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was brought down in the region by a missile, which the U.S. and Ukraine say was the work of rebels supported and armed by Russia. Officials in Moscow deny any involvement in the disaster.
