Another day, another hyper-generalized remark about Chinese people. That's the Fordbrothers for you.
This is what mayoral candidate Doug Ford had to say about the community at a flag-raising ceremony on Tuesday.
As quoted by The Toronto Star, Ford also said that Chinese are "extremely hard-working people" who "helped build this city, they helped build this country, and I just want to pay my respects."
Regarding subways, Ford said they "don't want anything else."
His remarks drew a sharp reply from fellow candidate Olivia Chow.
This is not the first time that Ford has made a sweeping generalization about an ethnic group.
After his brother gave a speech to Orthodox Jewish rabbis last year promoting the idea of a casino in the city, Ford told The Toronto Sun "[Mayor] Rob [Ford] absolutely loves the Jewish community and they're supportive, very supportive — they're business people."
In 2008, his brother Rob was criticized for describing Chinese people as follows:
"Those Oriental people work like dogs. They work their hearts out. They are workers non-stop. They sleep beside their machines."
The remarks triggered a protest at city hall, which was led by future Coun. Kristyn Wong-Tam, CityNews reported. Ford eventually apologized for the remark.
