Parts of northern Alberta are under an extreme cold warning, and things remain frigid in central and southern Alberta as well.
The Environment Canada warning covers Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Fort Saskatchewan, Peace River, High Prairie, Slave Lake and the Athabasca area.
Windchills of -40 C were forecast Monday morning, and the weather service says it's possible those temperatures could return Monday evening and into Tuesday.
Environment Canada recommends that if people venture outside they should dress in warm layers, including socks, a hat, gloves and a scarf, to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
The cold comes as many cities and towns across the province tackle winter storm clean-up after weekend snowfalls.
Calgary police said the combination of snow and cold led to 173 accidents on city streets between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday.

In Edmonton, officials have announced a seasonal parking ban while crews work to clear roads after Thursday's snowfall.
Parks Canada is also warning backcountry users that current snow accumulations and cold weather have led to considerable avalanche risk and that extra caution should be taken.
Warmer air is expected to make its way to the province by Wednesday, with a high of 8 C forecast for Calgary and a high of -8 C for Edmonton.
