Man Attacked With Hatchet In Edmonton Food Court Bathroom

'The Guys Assaulted Me With A Hatchet"

Edmonton police have two people in custody and are searching for a third after a man was attacked with a hatchet in the bathroom of an downtown mall Monday.

Officers say they were called to the Scotia Place basement food court just after 2 p.m., on reports of an assault with a weapon.

Witness Ray Houston, who tried to help stop the man's bleeding using napkins and a first aid kit from a nearby vendor, said he heard the man crying for help.

"He screamed he was assaulted, 'these guys assaulted me with a hatchet' or something," he told CBC News.

Houston said he treated the man for a stab wound to the abdomen until paramedics could arrive. He said the man also had a stab wound to his head.

Houston told the Edmonton Journal he witnessed who he thought were the attackers leave the food court, and was disappointed more people did not try to stop them.

"Edmonton, wake up,” Houston said. “Everyone could have stopped them."

Police say the victim is in serious, but stable, condition in hospital.

No charges have been laid.
