Calgary police have laid charges in the death of 31-year-old Dawns Baptiste.

Curtis Jade Tyson Healy, 25, was arrested late Saturday night. He faces a charge of first-degree murder.

Last Thursday police found a woman lying dead in a backyard in the 0-100 block of Whitworth Road N.E, after responding to a check-on-welfare call.

Police say Healy and Baptiste met on the evening of February 11 and travelled together around the city by C-Train. Just before midnight, police allege, they got off public transit at Whitehorn Station and walked into the Whitehorn community.

Police say a fight then broke out between the pair, and Baptiste was assaulted, dragged into a yard, sexually assaulted and later died of her injuries.

Baptiste did not have an address in Calgary, having just moved to the city several months before. She was known to frequent the Drop-In Centre.

Baptiste's death is the city's fifth homicide of 2015.

On Saturday, police released a surveillance photo of a person of interest, who was seen with Baptiste in the hours before her death.

Healy is to appear in provincial court on Tuesday.
