When you think of incentives to buy a house, you’re likely to picture cash back on the down payment or free condo parking.
But a home seller in Indonesia has taken the whole concept to the next level: She’s selling her hand in marriage along with the house.
“The bid of the century!” declares the ad for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Sleman district, Indonesia, as quoted in the Jakarta Post.
“Buy a house and marry the owner [terms and conditions apply]. For serious prospective buyers only. No negotiations.”
Among those terms and conditions? You have to pay full price, and “the buyer must be a devout Muslim who can be an imam for her family and can teach her how to properly wear a hijab,” the Post reports.
Homeowner Wina Lia says her realtor convinced her to make the unusual offer after she mentioned she was widowed in 2001 and is raising children on her own.
“I said OK to it,” the 40-year-old told the press. “I’m looking for a husband anyway.”
But you can buy the house without the wife, realtor Dian Purna Dirgantara told Time magazine. “If someone just wants the house, they can have that."
“Since yesterday morning there are continuous calls, I don’t count how many, there must be dozens or even hundreds.”
Regardless of how you feel about the devout Muslim woman who comes with the house, the property itself is a bargain by Western standards.
The 999,000-Indonesian-rupiah price tag works out to about C$95,000, not bad for a two-bedroom house sitting on a sixth of an acre and featuring granite floors and a fish pond, according to the Independent.
“Every time I fall in love, it fails – it’s happened twice now,” Lina told the press. “My wish is to sell this house, but it would be great if I also meet my soulmate.”
But given the stakes for Lina, we wouldn’t be too surprised if she proved more picky than most homeowners about who she sells to.
