A military training exercise had some Toronto residents on edge Wednesday afternoon.
The operations manager at the Oshawa Airport confirmed a Hercules airplane from CFB Trenton was flying low to the ground just east of downtown Toronto for a search and rescue exercise around 4 p.m. Thursday.
Diesel fuel from a plane’s exhaust normally creates a black plume when it burns, said Chris Pearce, but it was likely more visible because the plane was so low to the ground.
Several Torontonians tweeted just after 4 p.m. Wednesday that a plane was flying low over buildings.
One user, Joseph Travers tweeted "a small plane just buzzed our 8 floor office building. The windows rattled."
Another said she saw a trail of smoke behind a low-flying plane flying eastbound. A third reported seeing a plane on fire near Scarborough.
Toronto Fire and Police said they had no reports of a plane in distress.
