Old Port Mann Bridge Goes Out With A Bang (VIDEO)

3... 2... 1...

Thar she blows!

Early Tuesday morning, demolition crews used explosives to bring down the last three girders on the Surrey side of the old Port Mann Bridge, which spans the Fraser River.

A video posted to YouTube captured the big bang, and we must say, watching 600-tonne, 70-meter long girders crash to the ground is really quite something. (Watch video above.)

This kind of dismantling is usually done with cranes, according to the video description, but because of nearby train tracks, explosives were the safest way to finish the job.

Several Surrey residents were rather startled after being woken up by the early-morning blast, RCMP told The Vancouver Sun. Officers on the Coquitlam side of the bridge, however, did not receive any complaints about the noise.

Dismantling of the four-lane bridge began in 2012, and is expected to continue for eight more months, according to Global News.

The new eight-lane, tolled Port Mann Bridge — one of the widest in the world — opened in December 2012.
