Andreja Pejic is killing it these days.
The 23-year-old model just made fashion history with not one, but two, major new gigs.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the Serbian-born beauty was the first-ever transgender individual to land a feature in the pages of Vogue. The Out magazine cover star was photographed by Bruce Weber for a shoot called "The New World," which appears in the fashion bible's May 2015 issue. Of course, she looks amazing -- just take a look at the photo below.
Pejic expressed excitement about the feature by sharing the following caption:
"If at the beginning of my career in the modelling industry or half way through it or even this time last year you told me that I would end up having a 4 page feature in American Vogue I would have probably told you 'oh I dunno about that… So you can only imagine what I'm feeling right now."
In the interview, she talks about growing up as trans female and working in fashion, an industry that's seemingly becoming more accepting of a diverse range of individuals.
"There are just more categories now," Pejic told Vogue. "It’s good. We're finally figuring out that gender and sexuality are more complicated. There was definitely a lot of 'Oh, you're going to lose what’s special about you. You're not going to be interesting anymore. There are loads of pretty girls out there.'"
Pejic stuck to her guns and ignored the criticism to prove that "it is about showing that this is not just a gimmick."
The interview also reveals Pejic's second piece of history-making news. This year, she'll appear as the face of Make Up For Ever, making her one of the first transgender models to star in a major beauty campaign. (Lea T made headlines last year when she was signed on to star as the face, and hair, of Redken.)
Her success in the industry, which is too often restrictive in its views of beauty, is something to be celebrated. We can only hope that it continues to encourage diversity in fashion.
