OTTAWA — Former Liberal MP Andrew Kania is in talks with the Conservative party to run for them in Brampton West, The Huffington Post Canada has learned.

Kania was the Liberal MP for the riding from 2008 to 2011. He lost the last election to Conservative Kyle Seeback. Seeback is running again but the riding boundaries shifted slightly and the Tory MP is seeking a seat in a perceived safer part of the riding known as Brampton South. That leaves Brampton West with no incumbent MP.

Kania had sought the Liberal nomination for the riding last fall but withdrew in November before the race was called.

Liberal sources suggested he might have had a look at the membership numbers and decided to drop out. Registered nurse Kamal Khera was later acclaimed.

Kania didn’t elaborate Thursday when reached at his law firm, Kania Lawyers, about his decision to drop out of the Liberal race after being green-lit.

He has been talking to the Tories for a few months now, several sources told HuffPost, but no decision has yet been made.

Kania was mum about his plans.

“No comment,” he said. “Right now, I’m happily practicing law and doing my legal career.”
