Zoe Saldana's Husband Goes By Mr. Saldana

Zoe Saldana Says Her Husband Insisted On Taking Her Last Name

Zoe Saldana's husband Marc is the latest celebrity to take on his wife's last name.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star reveals in the July issue of InStyle magazine that her husband of two years decided that he wanted to share her last name and even insisted on it after she voiced her concerns.

Marco Saldana joins a handful of male celebrities who share their wive's last names. And it's not only celebrities who have chosen to go this route, according to Cosmopolitan — about five per cent of men in a group of 2,000 couples changed their last names to either the name of their spouse or a hyphenated version of both partners' names.

In the United States, men looking to change their names after marriage can run into a multitude of problems. In some states, couples are required to pay fees and petition courts to have a name changed. Legal firm Legalzoom says depending on the state, the process for men changing their last names is often not even associated with marriage.

In Canada, it's a much simpler story. According to EasyNameChange.ca, an organization dedicated to name change notifications, the process for men wanting to change their last names is very similar to the process for women. Individuals can apply for a marriage name change or a legal name change. The latter — which is recommended for men — requires one to legally denounce their prior name.
