An Alberta man is facing charges after he was caught going nearly three times the speed limit in Rocky View County.

The 44-year-old man was clocked driving his Nissan Maxima 222 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Big Hill Springs Road earlier this week, said the county's enforcement officials.

The man was driving on the single-lane highway northeast of Cochrane around 9:20 p.m.

"It's incredibly dangerous and the risk of harm to other innocent drivers and pedestrians is completely unacceptable," said Lorraine Wesley-Riley, manager of enforcement services for the county, in a news release.

"It's concerning that we seem to be facing more incidents of people driving at extreme speeds on public roads," she continued.

In addition to a speeding charge, the man also faces a charge of dangerous driving, after an officer witnessed him overtaking a fire truck.
