Batman Joker Sand Sculpture Wows Parksville Sandsculpting Competition

Talk about talent.

When most of us try to build something out of sand, we end up with a wimpy castle at best.

But when professional sand sculptors hit the beach, superheroes appear.

The team of David Ducharme of Winlaw, B.C. and Marielle Heessels from Rijen, Netherlands crafted a stunning statue of the Joker and Batman at the Canadian Open Sandsculpting Competition in Parksville, B.C. earlier this month.

Their creation titled "My Better Half" won first place in the doubles category and also the competitors' choice which is chosen by their peers.

We can see why:

This year's theme for the annual competition was "Heroes and Villains."

"We got this idea because Batman and the Joker are two sides of the same coin — one cannot live without the other," Heessels told HuffPost B.C. in an email. "It is really an interesting relationship that we tried to portray."
