A man has been charged with animal cruelty after two dogs were shot to death in Elkford, B.C.
The BC SPCA alleges James Bonnell shot a an eight-year-old female Rottweiler/shepherd cross and a two-year-old Labrador-cross in May.
The dogs were killed after they wandered into Bonnell's property and mauled some of his chickens, the agency said in a media release Friday. Witnesses say they saw the man put the dogs in the back of his truck and drive them out of town before they were shot.
The animals' owner, Jen Bryant, took to Facebook at the time to relay how devastated her family was at the loss.
"He shot my dogs in the face while they sat pretty wagging their tails, having no idea what was going on," she wrote.
In May, Bonnell told Global News that he shot the dogs on his property when he discovered one of them attacking a chicken, and drove them out of town to shoot them again out of pity.
"[I] went looking for the wounded dogs because I didn’t want them to suffer... I put them out of their misery as humanely as possible," he told the outlet, adding that he feels guilty about the animals' deaths.
Bonnell's first court appearance is set for Oct. 1 in Sparwood.
