OK Blue Jays, let's play (playoff) ball.
Canada's only Major League Baseball team will secure its first playoff berth in 22 years if they win at home on Friday ... and two other teams lose their games.
The Toronto Blue Jays are set to open a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at the Rogers Centre, and with a victory, the team will be 10 games above both the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Angels, should they both lose.
Those teams are still trying for wild card spots that are currently held by the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees.
This outcome would not only guarantee the Blue Jays a spot in the American League wild card race, but the team would also still be in the running to win the American League East division title.
Currently, the Blue Jays hold a three-game lead over divisional rivals the New York Yankees in the American League East, with 10 games remaining in the regular season. Both the Blue Jays and the Yankees play Friday.
If Toronto is victorious on Friday — so long as Houston and New York lose — this gives the team its first post-season appearance since 1993, when the Blue Jays won the second of its back-to-back World Series titles.
According to MLB.com, Toronto currently holds the record for the longest-standing post-season drought in the league.
The Blue Jays will face the Rays six times before the 2015 regular season is up. Reuters reports that Tampa Bay is five games away from earning the second American League wild card spot, and still has a chance of making the MLB playoffs.
Blue Jays playoff tickets became available to the public on Thursday, but sold out within 100 minutes of hitting the open market. Then, the post-season was hypothetical but possibly within reach, but now it could be a reality for Canadian sports fans.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated that if the Blue Jays win tonight, then they'll play the Yankees in the playoffs. This was not certain as of this story's writing, so it has been removed. The story also previously did not mention that the Jays' standing in the playoffs depends on the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels losing their games. That has been added.
