Edmonton 1st In Canada To Try New McDonald's Concept

Build your own burger and table service!

The McDonald's of the future has arrived, and Edmonton gets to check it out first.

The company announced Thursday that the city will be Canada's first market to try its new concept restaurants.

At 11 locations in the greater Edmonton area, customers will soon be able to build their own burger from nearly 30 options on a touch-screen kiosk, and then have it delivered to their table.

The options include five types of cheese, 12 toppings, two buns, a lettuce wrap and nine sauces — indecisive customers can also select from a few pre-built combinations.

The build-your-own burger menus, called "Create Your Taste," have already rolled out in a few international locations.

The move comes in advance of the company's 50th anniversary in 2017. "We are kicking off a bold plan to transform what guests experience," said John Betts, president and CEO of McDonald's Canada.

By the end of 2017, the plan is to bring the new menus and table-side service to 1,000 restaurants across Canada.

McDonald's is fighting intensifying competition from a variety of competitors and has admitted that it failed to keep up with changing tastes. The company is trying to cut $300 million in costs and looking to move more heavily into franchising.
