A Florida dad shut down haters in the best way possible after they called his 9-year-old son’s Cruella de Vil costume “inappropriate.”
Will Hutt’s son Liam loves Halloween and has always gone as strong female characters, including Black Swan, Cleopatra and Medusa. This year, he decided to be Cruella de Vil, decked out in full makeup, a wig and fur coat.
After posting photos of Liam’s epic costume to Facebook, Hutt received a number of positive comments. Unfortunately, there was one user who shared some negative thoughts.
“I must say completely inappropriate, and I can’t believe a parent would ever do that to their child!” the user wrote. “Sorry if I offend you or your friends but I think it’s wrong!!!!”
Hutt then responded in the classiest way to the now-deleted post: “We deal with this type of small minded person on a daily basis. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I will always support and encourage my kids creativity happily and without apology.”
Speaking to the Gaily Grind, Hutt explained that his family often deals with this type of ignorant reaction.
“It’s very typical for people to assume that because he has two dads, that we somehow guided him in this direction. That is simply not the case,” Hutt told the publication.
“It seems like he is more interested in the creative process and the eccentricity of the outfit rather than the dressing or impersonating a female, although if that was what he wanted to do I would still support him.”
While Hutt admitted to The Huffington Post that his initial reaction to the hater was to write an angry response, he later thought better of it and “decided to take the high road.”
“My son has planned to be Cruella for months and I was not going to let someone steal his shine,” he said. “Whether it's a Halloween costume, a lifestyle, a colour or race, we should embrace one another, learn from one another and remember not everyone will always see the world the same as we do. And that's OK, but don't be ugly to one another. Treat all people with respect and kindness.”
