Otha Anders Saves Pennies For 45 Years, Makes $5,000

Why saving every penny counts!

Otha Anders had been saving pennies for 45 years and last month, he finally cashed in.

The 73-year-old from Ruston, Louisiana collected 15 huge water jugs and deposited a total of $5,136 into his bank account to pay off a dental bill, USA Today notes.

"I became convinced that spotting a lost or dropped penny was an additional God-given incentive reminding me to always be thankful," Anders told USA Today. "There have been days where I failed to pray and more often than not, a lost or dropped penny would show up to remind me."

And while we no longer have any pennies to save in Canada (even if you still have a ton hiding in drawers at home), Anders' story is a good reminder to always save coins whenever you can.

In the video above by NowThis, we learn Anders actually didn't want to cash in in the first place. Watch the video to find out why he was forced to change his mind.
