A Charlie Hebdo cartoonist offered simple words Friday after a ripple of deadly attacks cast a dark cloud over the city of lights.
“Friends from the whole world,” Joann Sfar wrote in a cartoon posted to Instagram, thanking people the world over for their support via the hashtag #PrayForParis.
The cartoonist for the French satirical magazine said the city doesn’t need prayers or religion, instead shifting focus to other expressions to celebrate life.
“Our faith goes to music! Kisses! Life! Champagne and Joy!” he wrote, ending his message with his own hashtag: #ParisIsAboutLife.

Gunmen and suicide bombers killed at least 127 people across Paris in what’s being called the city’s worst case of violence since the Second World War. Earlier this year, two gunmen walked into the offices of Charlie Hebdo and opened fire, killing 12.
But between headlines shouting death tolls and horrifying descriptions of gunfire and bombings, stories have emerged to shine light on acts of kindness amid tragedy.
Taxi drivers turned off their meters to bring people to safe locations. Locals opened their homes to strangers in need of shelter.
And the morning after, despite the French president’s urgent request that Parisians stay inside, large numbers of people showed up outside clinics to donate blood and help the injured.
