"[My father] was excellent in helping us," Flutie recounted in his 2007 biography. "Whenever we needed something athletically, he was always there. He wanted to be a part of whatever we were a part of."

Flutie, who was born in Manchester, Maryland, played for teams ranging from the Chicago Bears to the Buffalo Bills, as well as the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts, throughout his 20-year football career.

Flutie noted both of his parents died from heart attacks, his father earlier in the day and his mother less than an hour later.

"They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it," he writes. "I would like to honor my parents for all that they did throughout my and my brothers’ and sister’s lives."
