The Huffington Post Canada took home two big wins from the COPA 2015 Awards on Thursday night.
In the Best Blog and Column green (news content) category, HuffPost Canada took home the silver award for their three nominated pieces that demonstrated the diversity of coverage in this unique section, as well as some of the stories that mattered most to Canadians over the past year.
Reva Seth's powerful "Why I Can't Remain Silent About What Jian Did to Me" was an integral part of the conversation surrounding Jian Ghomeshi and sexual assault, while former MP Glen Pearson's "Kevin Vickers Brought More Honour to Parliament Than Any Politician" spoke of the pride Canadians felt to have a man like Vickers defend our freedoms when we needed it most. Passionate teacher Carla Friesen's piece, "What You See in Today's Public School Classroom Is A Mirage" detailed the frustrations experienced by teachers across the nation who are willing to give Canada's children a better education at personal cost.
Senior blog editor Angelina Chapin, blog editors Safa Jinje and Devon Murphy, news managing editor Andree Lau, Ottawa bureau chief Althia Raj and managing editor Kenny Yum all played integral roles in assigning, editing and producing these blogs in a way that resonated with readers across the country.
Living editor Arti Patel took home a gold award in the red (consumer) category for Best Article or Series for her feature, "Black Canadians Face Stigma, Silence In Fight For Mental Health Awareness." The story offered an in-depth look at the specific challenges faced by African, Caribbean and black Canadians as they seek help for mental health issues.
It is the third award for Patel, who won a gold last year for another feature, Breaking Taboos: When South Asian Women Choose Divorce, as well as a silver in 2013 with senior lifestyle editor Rebecca Zamon for their feature on millennials and marriage.
HuffPost Canada was also nominated for Best Use of Social Media for Ron Nurwisah's Instagram initiative, Canadagram, featuring some of Canada's best photographers, the Living's team's work in Best Editorial Packaging in the coverage of Been Raped Never Reported, and for Best News Coverage for Althia Raj's exclusive regarding sexual assault accusations by a former NDP staffer.
