You may have noticed that celebrities from the fashion world have been posting walking selfies on Instagram lately, and while it does make for a cool street style-esque shot, there is a bigger meaning behind the photos and videos.
Presenting #ClimateCatwalk, a social response to the United Nations Climate Change Conference which took place in Paris on November 30th.
Fashion insiders are using the hashtag, along with #COP21 and #ClimateMarch, and posting photos and videos of themselves walking left to right to mimic a catwalk of models "walking toward a sustainable future," WWD reports. Posters then tag three friends to encourage them to post, similar to the ALS #IceBucketChallege which became viral back in 2014.
According to WWD, the initiative was started by husband-and-wife team Amber and Giovanni Testino (the brother of famed photographer, Mario Testino) in order to raise awareness about global warming. They had originally planned to join a rally on Nov. 29 in Paris, which ended up being cancelled due to the terrorist attacks in Paris that took place in November. Instead, they decided to go digital with the project.
"We thought, why don’t we reach out to people in our industry and call them to be part of an online march? If people don’t wake up and say something about this or do something about this, we’re going to miss the chance and it’s going to be too late," Amber tells WWD.
Of the project, Amber describes it as a "strong graphic" and "something that's really meant to be fun and speaks to as many people as possible."
"It's meant to get the attention of the leaders and say that we expect action," she explains.
The Testinos have since enlisted their famous friends to participate, including Mario Testino, Charlotte Tilbury, Mert Atlas and Natalia Vodianova. Vogue U.K., Lily Aldridge and Eva Chen have also posted their own #ClimateCatwalk photos and videos.
