Icons Unmasked In Illustrator Alex Solis' Pop Culture Series

Who's behind the mask?

Ever since Clark Kent first flew out of a telephone booth as Superman, we knew there was more to our favourite characters than they let on.

This series of drawings by Chicago-based illustrator Alex Solis, called "Icons Unmasked," shows just which other popular characters have been leading double lives and slinking their way into our beloved TV series. And while some we may have suspected, others come as a total surprise.

Each drawing picks up on some similarities between old pop culture icons that come out in newer, unrelated shows. In a video about the project, Solis mused about whether anything is truly unique, or just a remix of something else.

Parallels between "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy," for instance, have always been discussed, and "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane even admitted the series inspired him. So it comes as no surprise that when Peter Griffin takes off the mask, he was Homer Simpson all along. But then again, "The Simpsons'" slingshot-toting troublemaker Bart reminds us of another neighbourhood menace.

Solis' parallels don't stop there. Jessica Rabbit and Betty Boop may look very different, but you have to admit the bombshell-dress-wearing lounge singers are kind of alike. And Donald Trump surely bears resemblance to a villain we know all too well.

His work has mostly been shared through social media, but Solis has started a Kickstarter campaign to create a book and print copies of his work.

"I felt like this would make a great book to ruin the childhood of all your friends," Solis said in the video for his fundraiser.

He's completely blown his $7,000 goal out of the water, currently raising nearly $40,000 with days still left in the campaign.

Check out his drawings below and on his website, but be warned, you may never see these icons the same way again.

C-3PO from "Star Wars" was really a member of our favourite futuristic family, "The Jetsons":

We all had an inkling about this one. Bart Simpson is Dennis the Menace in disguise.
