Most people can agree distracted driving is dangerous, but do bananas count as a distraction?
A single mother in the U.K. has received a nearly C$300 fine after she was caught by police last June eating one behind the wheel of her car, according to the Bournemouth Daily Echo. However, she defended her car was stationary at the time.
Elsa Harris was fined about C$200 on the spot and given the choice of taking a drivers' awareness course or three penalty points — but she opted to take the case to court instead.
She told ITV last year that she was "horrified" by the ticket.
"It's the most expensive banana I've ever had in my life."
"I had already peeled it and started driving. Then when I stopped at a roundabout I pulled down a little bit of banana skin momentarily and carried on eating and driving," she said.
"Understandably, it is illegal to take both hands off the wheel but I don't think I was a danger to anybody."
According to a Dorset police department Facebook page, Harris was offered the course for not having proper control of her car while driving.
She pled guilty in court, and received three penalty points as well as the bigger fine.
She told the Echo that she pled guilty on the advice of a lawyer friend, who told her she'd never win.
Police tried to be witty in their post offering an update on the case, saying the story might "ApPEEL to our followers."
However, Harris won't likely share the same sense of humour.
"It's the most expensive banana I've ever had in my life," she told ITV last year — but it got even pricier since then.
While the debate is still ripe on whether or not Harris actually risked other road users' lives — one woman on Vancouver Island cannot say the same.
