St. Albert, Alta. Dog Breaks Out Of Kennel To Comfort Crying Puppies

Her maternal instincts kicked in.

A couple of crying puppies were just too much to bear for a momma dog staying at an Alberta kennel.

An Australian shepherd cross named Maggie was staying at Barkers Pet Motel and Grooming in St. Albert, Alta. when she heard the cries of two young rescue puppies brought in from the humane society.

Maggie busted out of her own kennel to lay down next to theirs.

We see a lot of adorable things here at Barkers but this story takes the cake... Last night our newest foster puppies...

Barkers owner Sandy Aldred told CBC News the kennel often boards dogs from the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society and the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society when the groups don't have enough foster homes available.

When she was checking surveillance footage of the facility, she noticed Maggie — who had been carefully locked up earlier — pacing back and forth in front of the puppies' neighbouring kennels before returning to theirs.

To escape from her own enclosure, Maggie had pushed her water bowl up against the door and squeezed though the opening, according to Global News.

“I think she knew as soon as those puppies got here at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon, that they were here and after we left she thought, ‘here’s my chance! I’m going to go and see them,'” Aldred said.

Maggie's own litter of puppies was recently adopted out, which may have be why her maternal instincts kicked in.

Aldred expects the two puppies will find homes soon, according to CBC News.

"A lot of our staff have fallen in love with them, so they'll take them home in the evenings and let them have a home environment for the night," she said.
