They say dogs are man's best friend. But for rescue pups Simon and Sammie, it seems as though they've found that companionship in each other.
Last Tuesday, New York City-based shelter Rescue Dogs Rock NYC shared a heartbreaking Facebook picture of what looked like the pair holding paws. Both dogs had unfortunately suffered from severe abuse at the hands of their previous owners before being brought in for treatment at Paws & Claws Animal Clinic in Columbia, South Carolina.
"Simon heard him crying in there and his ears perked up," Nikki Jones, a vet tech at Paws & Claws told WIS News on Tuesday, "And he came in and just very gently jumped up on the X-ray table with his one paw and was kind of like, 'Hey, bud. What's wrong? Don't worry. These guys got ya.'"
Simon (right) is currently recovering from mange, FOX 8 Cleveland reported. While Sammie (left), who was described by the shelter as a "critical case," was shot, dragged, spray painted blue and came in with two broken legs.
And while the pair may have a long road to recovery, they have certainly found comfort in the fact that they have each other.
The photo has since gone viral, and donations have been pouring in for four-month-old Sammie. And of course, his "brother in rescue," Simon has not left his side.
The pair will still need a few more months of treatment before they can look for fur-ever homes.
