Lena Dunham surprised everyone with a new book release today at noon E.S.T. and within an hour they were sold out.
The "Girls" creator announced without notice via Instagram that she'd published a 56-page chapbook made up of her old diary entries, entitled "Is it Evil Not to Be Sure?".
In her online store, Dunham explains that while recovering from surgery, she unearthed a hard drive that contained her old journals from about 10 years ago, when the actress was 19 years old.
"I have always believed that women chronicling their own lives, even (or especially) at their most mundane, is a radical act," Dunham writes.
She decided to share them in a book, in hopes of encouraging other women to share their stories.
The new release is an essay on diary-keeping interwoven with her "most absurd and secret" personal journal entries.
Dunham issued 2,000 signed copies (some with bonus smudge marks) for US$25 each for the first run, along with unlimited ebook versions.
All proceeds are going to the charity Girls Write Now, which mentors girls, runs workshops and encourages high school girls to write.
The ebook is still available for purchase for $2.99.
