Hold on, Drake is going home... to the comedy stage in Toronto.
Undated footage of a young Drake acting in an improv sketch in his hometown of "The 6ix" is becoming increasingly popular following a CBC News feature on the performance's venue, The Rivoli, which ran earlier this week.
In the video, the "One Dance" rapper and longtime "Degrassi: The Next Generation" actor shows a boyish enthusiasm for his on-the-fly comic routine with a female scene partner while dressed in an oversized black t-shirt, black sweatpants and white sneakers.
Together, the two performers react to each other's improvisational decisions, and Drake shows off a rhythmic shrug in what could have been a blueprint for the dance moves he masters in his now-infamous video for "Hotline Bling."
Cue the "Started From the Bottom" jokes.
Later, his character outs himself as being gay and concludes the set with a song. In his final moments on stage, Drake tells his collaborator that "[she] is pregnant," drawing major laughs from the audience.
Drake's comedic strengths and instincts should come as no surprise to longtime fans of the multihyphenate star and Grammy winner. The 29-year-old has hosted "Saturday Night Live" twice in his career, taking on that artistic responsibility as recently as last month. In a "Black Jeopardy" sketch, he memorably referenced fellow Canadian hip-hop artist Kardinal Offishall and the Toronto Transit Commission.
But, this resurfaced video is also reminiscent of the skills Drake showed in a Jan. 2015 clip, which was filmed at Toronto's Comedy Bar. That night, the singer surprised the crowd when he reacted to comedian Red Grant's impression of him, briefly joining his act before the two laughed off any comic tension on-stage.
Drake's musical prowess continues to make headlines too. The Toronto native holds the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart and Top 200 Album Chart for the third consecutive week, and becomes the first male artist to achieve this streak since 50 Cent did the same back in 2005.
