Most women know to look out for lumps, bumps and thick skin around their breasts when conducting an at home examination, but there are other signs to look out for.
On June 20, Claire Warner took to Twitter to reveal that after spotting a dimple on her left breast, a doctor examined her and noticed a lump.
After undergoing a biopsy, Warner confirmed she had grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, a curable cancer that requires surgery, chemo and radiation therapy.
Chronicling her journey of discovery, acceptance and perseverance on her Twitter account My Left Boob, Warner credited cancer survivor Lisa Royle's breast cancer selfie for alerting her to the dimple.
Royle, who shared her photo on Facebook days before her mastectomy, said the barely noticeable dimples on the underside of her left breast were the only symptoms of breast cancer she had. In the post she also urged women to take a closer look at their breasts as it could save their lives.
Warner also shared an image of her dimpled breast on Facebook and it immediately went viral with more than 9,000 shares in less than 48 hours. While the photo is no longer up on Facebook, Warner continues to encourage women to #checkforthedimple on Twitter.
