Canada's Most Unsafe City Is Winnipeg, Poll Suggests

But that's not what data from Statistics Canada says.

A new poll has ranked Winnipeg as Canada's most dangerous city.

The survey, released by Mainstreet Research and Postmedia Tuesday, asked more than 4,000 Canadians to rank the cities they perceive as being safe or unsafe.

Seventy-two per cent of respondents regarded Ottawa as either safe or very safe, putting it in the poll's first spot. Winnipeg placed last, with 56 per cent saying they consider the city unsafe. Toronto, Montreal, Saskatoon and Edmonton rounded out the bottom five cities.

The poll's 15 most-to-least safe cities:

  1. Ottawa
  2. Charlottetown
  3. Moncton
  4. St. John's
  5. Quebec City
  6. Regina
  7. Halifax
  8. Victoria
  9. Vancouver
  10. Calgary
  11. Edmonton
  12. Saskatoon
  13. Montreal
  14. Toronto
  15. Winnipeg

But as the polling firm points out, the Winnipeg results go against data from Statistics Canada identifying Saskatoon as the city with the highest crime rate in the country.

"Winnipeg, which is ranked at the bottom by Canadians has a crime severity index lower than Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina and Saskatoon," said Quito Maggi, CEO of Mainstreet Research in a press release.

“The results paint an interesting portrait of how we see each other."

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.52 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
