Stephen Ames' House Relisted For Sale In Calgary

Comes complete with a golf simulator.

The luxury home of Canadian golfer Stephen Ames is back on the market – but you'll need a lot of green to sink this estate.

The nearly 11,000-square-foot home, located in Calgary's ritzy Aspen Estates neighbourhood, was originally listed in July 2015 but failed to sell.

The asking price for the custom-built home is just under $8 million. The home features a sauna, nine fireplaces, nine bathrooms and a wine room with space for more than 1,800 bottles.

There's also a gym and a golf simulator room – unsurprising given the home's original owner.

Luxury properties – especially those over $5 million – often sit on the market for longer than other homes, says Tanya Eklund, realtor with RE/MAX Real Estate, who relisted the property last week.

However, the downturn in Calgary's economy isn't as much of a concern to agents who list these ultra-expensive homes.

"Purchasers at this (price) point are not as impacted by day-to-day shifts in oil and gas or the economy. They've typically made their millions, and usually we find these buyers are paying in cash," realtor Corinne Poffenroth told The Canadian Press last year.

Although luxury home listings in Calgary have been down recently, RE/MAX says the market has stabilized in 2016, and sales of $1 milion-plus homes are up 13 per cent year-over-year.

Some people raised their eyebrows when the Ames' home was first listed in 2015 – Rachelle Starnes of Royal LePage Foothills told the Globe and Mail she thought the property was "aggressively priced."

That lasted for a month, until home builder Jim Quinn listed his home across the street for $12 million, making Ames' mansion "look like a bargain," said Starnes.
