Teaching Charity On Family Day

We introduced the kids to the idea of charity by getting them to donate their time; they helped us sell Daffodils, which was a mere four hours, but the impact it had on them was profound. The kids also gained a greater understanding of how they can make a difference.

How do you raise kids to be charitable? To have an awareness outside themselves? To know that they can affect change? For Meg and I it was committing to a cause and asking them to help.

We decided to get involved with the Canadian Cancer Society. Our father passed away suddenly from the disease, so it was the obvious choice for us.

We introduced the kids to the idea of charity by getting them to donate their time; they helped us sell Daffodils, which was a mere four hours, but the impact it had on them was profound. The kids also gained a greater understanding of how they can make a difference. From that experience Meg and I realized we have to keep the ball rolling; a little altruism can go a long way.

We made it a personal goal to involve the kids in at least three charitable activities this year. They are the right age; ranging from five to eleven years-old. Our hope is, if we make a habit of it now, being charitable will provide them with a healthy dose of perspective and empathy their whole lives.

When we heard about the Canadian Cancer Society's Family Snow Day, eh! taking place in Toronto on February 15th, it seemed like a great fit for our families; a charitable event that is both an indoor and outdoor affair. We would love to see the disease eradicated and offer support to those dealing with cancer. If you would like to donate click here.

The good news is there are a ton of cool events happening this year.

If you live in Toronto or the surrounding area, visit this website for a list of Family Day activities and events. Perhaps you were hoping to bust out of the city and do something new, I think the Family Fishing Event would be super cool. We have never participated in it, but it's on my radar now.

I would love to take the kids curling here.

If spending the day eating pancakes and watching movies is more your thing, you can always enjoy an evening hike at Crawford Lake.

Enjoy the day with your family.
