I am often asked, "How do you have so much energy?"

Anyone can have more energy; they just need to know what to do to cultivate it. It isn't a special pill or a magic powder. It is found in some really basic things that I have discovered that consistently keep my energy level high, regardless of what I have going on in my life.

Here are my six steps for keeping my energy levels consistent and high, and they're actually very simple!

1.I eat a protein rich breakfast every morning.

Eating protein first thing in the morning helps to stabilize your blood sugar and provide more energy throughout the day. Do this and you avoid that mid-day slump. Good options are Protein Pancakes or a green smoothie.

2.I work with people who bring out the BEST in me.

... and not the STRESS in me. This is key. Surround yourself with people who lift you higher and who do not drain you. Period.

3.I eat protein rich snacks, and regularly.

I am like a little kid. I need to eat every two to three hours. This helps to keep blood sugar stable and energy levels on an even keel. It also helps to eliminate low blood sugar dips that tend to leave leave us feeling tired and anxious.

4.I exercise every day.

I don't care where I am or what I am doing, I make this a priority and put it in my agenda. Some times it is a run, and other days it's a walk, a yoga class or weights. Whatever it is, for one hour a day I do this. No, I don't always feel like it and it can be a huge challenge to fit it in, but I ALWAYS feel better and have more energy, and you will, too. This is non-negotiable in my life.

5.I've learned to say no.

Often we over-commit and make ourselves stressed which leaves us feeling drained. Stop. Learn to say no to other people and yes to yourself.

6.I get my iron levels checked regularly.

As much as 80 per cent of the population is iron deficient. According to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in the world. When I had a nutrition practice, I would often see people walking around with severely low iron. You can learn some of the symptoms of low iron here.
