For so long, popular media has, in a sharp but narrow way equated BHM with "slavery"! So much that new African immigrants to the America's like myself have often struggled with seeing their role in the BHM celebrations. Subsequently, this has led to questions and doubt as to where global Africans fit where BHM is concerned.
The ambiguity of the term "rising" is striking. Advancing to maturity, or merely approaching a different level of development, or perhaps sitting on the runway, as in an aircraft preparing for a take-off? And is the entire SSA sub-continent comprising 47 countries with a population of 960 million rising in one go?
There is a new optimism associated with Africa these days. The phrase "Africa Rising" is showing up with regular frequency in media reports within the continent and beyond, and instead of a steady diet of African despair and failure, we are finally hearing about African innovation and success. Perhaps it is finally Africa's turn, and we at the Canadian Co-operative Association will have front row seats for a long-overdue African renaissance.
