The last time I breastfed my first child, I bawled. Unbeknownst to my 13-month-old, I was about to disappear for several days, a last-resort measure to terminate a relationship that was marked by inadequate milk supply, sleepless nights, blocked ducts and metabolic chaos. She was frustrated, I was frustrated, I was losing more weight than was healthy and I had a job interview in a week. It was taking a huge toll on everyone. Heaving with sadness and guilt, I finally agreed to go cold-turkey.
1. Stop trying to hide veggies and "healthy" stuff in other foods -- I can handle them straight up. Sure I may not devour those green leafies you put on my tray from day one, but unbeknownst to you, I'm slowly learning to like them.
Starting baby on solids is a big deal. We're worried about them choking, not eating enough, not getting enough nutrients... Babies can feel our stress. And no one eats well when they're stressed. So just sit back and let your brilliant baby do his/her thing.
I was nursing my then eight-month-old who -- until that point -- was an ardent breastfeeder and had been gobbling up baby mush for two months with gusto. Then he started biting me. I turned to Google. I don't recall how many pages upon pages I looked at before stumbling across baby-led weaning. BLW in a nutshell: Baby starts eating once she can sit up unsupported and pick up her own food and put it into her mouth unassisted.
