Under Justin Trudeau, "Canada is back" to isolating itself from world opinion on Palestinian rights. On Monday, Canada joined the U.S., Israel, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Federated States of Micronesia and Palau in opposing a UN Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee resolution in support of Palestinian self-determination.
With the release of a draft "compromise" resolution last week, the Green Party of Canada (GPC) seems poised to advocate economic pressure on Israel -- while not endorsing the BDS movement -- and May seems comfortable leading the party forward with this position.

What does the Canadian government and the Israel lobby have to gain by passing an anti-BDS motion? What is the purpose of this massive mobilization of resources against a non-violent civil society movement? In demanding that Palestinians and the international community accept Israel as a "Jewish state," Israel and its lobby groups like CIJA are in fact conflating the behaviour of this state with all Jewish people. Many Jews, like myself, see this conflation of Jewish people with militant Zionism as actually endangering Jews, both inside and outside of Israel.
In a disingenuous ploy to gain acceptance and support in the West, many proponents of BDS typically claim that their movement is simply about promoting the "fundamental rights" of Palestinians in accordance with "international law." This means, foremost, pressuring Israel to end "its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands" and allowing "the rights of the Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties [in Israel] as stipulated in UN resolution 194."
We have every right to ignore the BDS campaign -- as most of us do. But if we are not going to help Palestinians, the least we can do is allow for peaceful protest and grassroots organisation. We must break from the all too common policy of protecting the strong while denigrating the weak.
