Todays' well-meaning parents who are over-scheduling and over-instructing because of fear of competition are seriously under-preparing children. The days of awards and promotions for those who know the right answer are quickly disappearing.
When I was a kid, like many of my friends I would race home after school so I could change and get outside to play. Our time was, for the most part, totally unstructured, unless you consider being told to "be home when the streetlights go on" as structure. There are many theories as to whether exposing our kids to this type of structure and (arguably) overscheduling is good for them.
As a child, I would play outside all day long, only coming indoors for meals. How the times have changed! My kids think that somehow it is my husband's and my responsibility to entertain them! In my own generation, my parents never played the role of entertainment clowns, so how have today's parents somehow fallen into this role? How to shake up this generation of BORED kids? Here are some of my suggestions.
