daycare

We are fooling ourselves if we think that full-day kindergarten is anything more than a glorified babysitting service. A four- or five-year-old child may benefit from a few hours of schooling each day, but six hours straight? Is this really for the benefit of the child, or the parents and well-paid teaching staff?
The tragic death of two-year-old Eva Ravikovich who died in an unlicensed home daycare that was clearly overrun with children has spurred lawsuits against both the daycare provider and the Ministry of Education. While the lawsuits seem perfectly justifiable, there is one more party that is arguably culpable in the death of this little girl: Her parents.
MP Eve Adams was called out for claiming $2,777 in personal expenses during the 2011 campaign, that range from trips to the spa and salon to childcare. It is hard to defend an expense claim such as nail salon visits or a $3 cupcake purchased weeks after election day. But some campaign expenses are fair game. Why wouldn't it be a legitimate campaign expense to provide childcare for a mom-candidate while she is campaigning 12-16 hours a day? Do we want more women in politics or not? These factors have kept women in the "weaker sex" category in politics.
Proclamations and election mania aside, families may have to hold their breath long after the party hats are put away, the platforms are dusted off, and campaign offensives are silenced into temporary stalemate before any genuine childcare programs are implemented.
If there is one thing we know for sure about day care, it is that it is crawling in germs of great density and diversity. Despite the new flowers and warmer weather, the germs and colds appear to be providing one final hurrah as we usher spring through the door. Here's how to boost your child's immune system.
Having your child prepare a healthy meal for the family seems like an unattainable dream for most parents. However, if you instil the habit of cooking in your child at an early age, you are providing them with the skills they need to live a healthy life, and having fun while doing it.
B.C. Premier Christy Clark's sentiment is that the burden of daycare is a "temporary" one for families. I disagree. Many families cannot afford to purchase a home because of it. Many women (and men) take themselves out of the workforce because of it. Many families go into debt because of it. Many couples decide not to have children (or more than one child) because of it.
Your child hands you a report card you have a hard time feeling proud about. Desperate, you at once want to reprimand your child, take as much TV time out of the schedule, ban video games and enroll in the longest possible summer school program to undo the damage. Don't panic.
If you're a parent, chances are you've encountered a child who attempts to talk at an impressively young age. Similarly, some children seem to have an uncanny eye for reading and identifying facial expressions. How children choose to explore the world, is indicative of what their preferred learning style is. A great body of research has been dedicated to understanding different learning styles. Although most children learn by doing, in general children tend to gravitate more towards one of three learning styles
