For many of us, working a regular day job is a means to support our families and loved ones. We trade our time from nine to five for a paycheck; we invest the money from that paycheck into our private lives and family. We trade our time for money, and use that money to improve our quality of life. But many working parents are beginning to realize there are alternate arrangements that might work better for their families -- and for themselves professionally.
Like most couples, we have certain labels we've come to own over time. I, for example, am the visionary, the queen of creative chaos. I bring fire, optimism and 10 ideas a minute to each conversation. Meanwhile, Pat is producer, the king of structure. He is organized, dependable, a genius at follow through.
I used to think I suffered from poor work-life balance while working for a large corporation, when I slept with my smartphone and responded to queries from colleagues before the break of dawn.
