With all the negative attention around internships, companies may be tempted to shy away from the idea, but this is a poor business decision. The investment you make in internship programs can provide a tremendous return for the company and the student, so it should not be overlooked.
One quick Google search for the word "intern" and you will find a myriad of opinions, blog posts, and even the odd intern job posting. Most of the debate surrounds the topic of interns earning money, or in most cases the lack thereof.
Unpaid internships are in the news again as a result of a groundbreaking study on precarious employment in Ontario. There are a number of factors that play into the decision to pay an intern (or not), of course. That said, greed is ultimately the common denominator that business leaders share when determining whether to create paid or unpaid internships.
