Sunday night marked the Tony Awards, Broadway's annual love letter to itself. As a self-described musical theatre nerd, this night is one I countdown to all year. But the event reminded me how musical theatre has a particularly poor reputation outside of the theatre community.
Audiences will also be treated to a live stage reading of David Auburn's play "Proof", featuring some of Vancouver's top actors, and afterwards get to learn about Auburn's experiences in the theatre, writing technique and approaches, influences, the road to writing a Pulitzer-award winning play, and much more, in an intimate moderated In Conversation.
Original Kids Theatre Company Alumni are presenting the first local production of the Tony Award-winning smash hit Avenue Q later this month. The Canadian troupe has learned all the right tricks with life-size replicas of the puppets used on Broadway, so I took my interview to the true stars of the show -- the puppets themselves!
Award season is upon us and with it the often-heard complaints: awards are silly or they don't mean anything. Those declarations are a tad presumptuous, aren't they? After all, what is an award? A prize or other mark of recognition given in honour of an achievement.
