When we feel stuck, our usual tactics -- giving ourselves more time, assessing pros and cons, soliciting our friends for advice -- don't really help, and in fact, can escalate our anxiety.
A lot of people beat themselves up because they think they're supposed to know exactly what their ideal career looks like. So they refuse to experiment or to commit to even minor changes until they know what the big picture will look like in exacting detail.
You're supposed to know how to make your parents proud and make a whack of cash, kicking ass and taking numbers along the way. Right? The truth is, you're not supposed to know what the future looks like. Nobody does. Why didn't anybody tell you this? Because it's scary as hell, that's why.
Most of the people I work with come to me because they feel lost and they don't know what they want. At least, they think they don't know what they want. But more than half of the time - heck, most of the time - the problem has nothing to do with knowing; it's the fear associated with the desire.
The only constraint when a corporation decides to work on its credibility is the time, and in business, time is cash. People do not realize how long it could be to build a credibility sound enough to help them to get out of a crisis situation or to build a relationship with stakeholders. We often say that it takes years to build credibility and it takes hours to lose, and it is so true.
Whether it's making amends with a colleague, asking for a raise, requesting help, admitting you don't understand, or going for the promotion, good things can happen when you take down your walls. Yes, bad things can happen too, and there is the risk of disappointment.
2014 will be the year that workers stop sitting and taking the abuse that has been heaped on them by their employers since the financial crisis. You can only push people so far before you become the company no one wants to work for.
