Since turning 40, I have noticed a transformation happening with my body. Joints are cracking, I'm feeling stiffness and injuries that never existed in my younger years. These have all been physical wake-up calls for me in this new phase of my life.

I eat a healthy, mostly vegan diet and am always wondering if there are more things I could be doing to increase and enhance my well-being.

Now my curiosity has turned to nutritional supplements and how they might help me to feel vibrant, healthy and my best self.

"Even if you eat organic, the variety of nutrients found in different organic foods might not be obtained in a day, and the food is only as healthy as the soil it's grown in, so the person might not be getting enough nutrients each day," said Peggy Kotsopoulos, registered holistic nutritionist, Contributor to Brendan Brazier's Thrive Forward and author of the new book Kitchen Cures.

Peggy says there are three top supplements that can help you feel great after 40:

1. Omega 3 fatty acids: these plant-based sources can be found in savi seeds, chia seeds and flax seeds or can be taken in a supplement. Dosage requirements vary per individual, depending on your age, how active you are and your health condition. Best to check with your health care practitioner to determine what amount is right for you.

2. Probiotics: food sources include kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha, which all can be enjoyed daily. Since it's hard to determine how much -- and quality -- of what you are actually taking through food, it's best to take a supplement. Look for a multi-strain probiotic supplement that is measured in CFUs (colony forming units).

3. Vitamin D: a great idea for anyone living in the northern hemisphere. How much you should take is generally half your body weight in ounces.

The past month I have been using different supplements to see what works for me. I have tried wheat grass, macca, chlorella and I have been feeling genuinely healthier. I used to sleep in on the weekends quite late but now I feel I have more energy from sleeping better, waking earlier and cleared my adult acne.

When choosing a supplement Peggy says it's better for your body if you can find a food grade supplement rather than a synthetic supplement. Your body will readily take in a food grade supplement and with a synthetic supplement your body may not process it as effectively.

Some people may have adverse reactions to certain supplements, so read the bottle carefully for the daily amount to take and if the supplement may have a reaction for you.

Certain supplements may also negate the benefits, be careful when you have calcium and iron. Iron inhibits the absorption of calcium and vice-versa, so you do not want to have these two at the same time.

I am going to continue trying nutritional supplements and will share with you how I am feeling and what happens along my journey to optimum health. Check back to my blog regularly, I will continue to share my experiences on my path to having the healthiest and happiest life after 40.
