If you have been following my blog for a while, you know my hair is thick and not so easy to tame. I am always learning new tips and tricks that will make hair styling that much easier.
Recently, I spoke with Sephora and they shared with me the different types of brushes that can be used to create different styles and which brushes work best for different types of hair.
To start with, there are four main types of bristles. Each bristle will help you create a different style or can be helpful to nurture specific kinds of hair. Understanding the bristles function will help you find the brush that will work best for your hair. This will also be a great help when you style your hair!
Nylon Bristles
Nylon bristles provide minimal to plenty of control, this just depends on how close the bristles are to each other and their flexibility. When you have softer bristles that are spread out on the brush there will be less control and when the bristles are closer together, they will provide more direction for your hair.
Metal
These types of bristles are too stiff to be safe on human hair and are to be used only on wigs or hairpieces. Don't use metal bristles on your head or it could really ouch!
Boar
This is actually hair of a hog. These bristles are considered to the best because they seal the outer cuticle layer. Usually, manufacturers will have a mix of the boar and nylon bristles. This gives the bristles a bit more strength as the boar bristles can be very weak on their own. Boar bristles are soft and gentle enough to be used on children's hair too.
Porcupine
These bristles are great for fine hair. Porcupine is not actual quills from a porcupine but several bristles assembled together. This includes a mixture of nylon and boar bristles. This mixture is also great for thick hair to get right down to the scalp.
Different Types of Brushes To Add Style To Your Hair
The following brushes will provide support for your different types of hairstyles.
Round brush
Make use of a round brush when you would like to have some gentle curve or curl to your hair but you do not want as much curl as you would get from a curling iron or hot rollers.
Here is a great tip about round brushes. Try to find one that has a light handle so your wrist does not get tired when holding it while you are blow drying your hair. Aluminum can be some of the lightest handles for round brushes.
Cushioned brush
This is a great brush for long hair because it will not put a lot of stress on longer hair. The shape of this brush is usually in a flat or oval shape. Great to simply brush out your hair.
Vented brush
Vented brushes are usually used to dry out the hair. The vents help to speed up the hair drying process and the bristles help keep the natural wave. As you are using your vented brush make sure that all of the little balls on the ends of the bristle are still intact. If there is a little ball missing this could cause stress on your hair when you are doing a blow out.
Classic styling
Classic styling brush is great when you would like to have a smoother more polished look to your hair. A classic styling brush usually has anywhere from five to nine rows of stiff nylon brushes. The brush can be handy when drying your hair as it is a bit easier to manage when you have a blow dryer in one hand and a brush in the other.
