Spring is a time for evolution. As the sun comes out and the days get longer, I always feel inspired to try a new look. I love getting my hair cut. As my stylist trims my locks, I always feel a sense of release. Letting go of the past and moving forward. My stylist once shared with me that he believed that hair holds past experiences and history and letting go of that is an opportunity to move forward. I so agree.

I have been toying with the idea of getting hair extensions or doing something different, just not sure what. So I spoke with Taylor Smits, Creative Director of Aveda Tonic South Granville in Vancouver, B.C. and he shared some of the hottest looks for spring:

Top hair cuts for spring 2014

Bobs: Biggest cut of 2013 continues to dominate runways around the world. We see them in all forms and lengths, from smooth and sleek to chopped and shattered. Keep shape by booking regular trims. Play around with volume by adding thickening sprays during blow-drying. Keep products to a minimum. Build body and lock in moisture by rough drying.

Short Cuts: Close crops, long side-swept pixies, undercuts. The perfect pixie never goes off trend. Try sweeping off the face or slicking back with a deep side parting to switch up your look.

Mid Length Cuts: Easy to maintain, minimal styling required. Large velcro rollers can be applied to add extra volume and give a touchable wave.

Fringes: Add drama and interest with a focal point. Blunt and straight, long and choppy, side swept or parted in the middle.

Top hair styles for spring 2014

As Seen on the runways:

Messy Up-dos with Texture: Rough blow-drying with a volume spray. Adding a French or inverted braid around the hairline and pinning into a loose undo. Pull the braid apart gently for an editorial look.

Mermaid Waves: Create two large braids (one on each side) on slightly damp hair before bed, add a texture creme in the morning to soften the waves and add a little grittiness. Keep heat tools and product to a minimum to keep the look "undone." Looks amazing on ombre hair.

Low Ponytail: For tight and sleek, place low at the nape of the neck. Smooth with firm hold hairspray to complete the look. For a softer frame without sacrificing shape, gently move the pony from left to right before securing at the nape.

Smooth/Straight: Simple and beautiful, make sure the hair is regularly treated with high quality intensive masks, and protect hair from heat damage with a daily leave in treatment.

Accessories: Create an entirely different feeling by adding embellished headbands, scarves. Bring Spring into your hair with floral garlands and crowns.

Top trends for hair colours

Platinum all over (Anne Hathaway), or cool-toned tips with dark roots (Michelle Williams) is on point. Keep blondes bright and clear by using blue/violet toned shampoos and conditioners.

Rose Gold (Jessica Chastain) Light auburn. Protect with gentle colour-safe shampoos and Conditioners that have UV filters built in.

Monochromatic Brunettes. Let the shine speak for itself. Add a moisturizing oil to hair to boost shine (Katy Perry).

Gradual Ombre. Starting the colour transition higher up on strands for greater impact. (Kate Mara) Be sure to protect blonde ends with daily leave in treatment.

I encourage you to keep trying new looks and moving forward. Not only with your hair but with your life. Spring is the perfect time to evolve and find a new look.
