Top Tips on What to Wear to Yoga!

For men and woman you're looking for clothing that allows your body to move through poses without restricting your flow. Clothes that incorporate stretch and are cut close to the body are normally a good option. Good quality yoga apparel should have stretch recovery, meaning the material will bounce back and not bag out after use.

I recently wrote an article sharing some tips on how to start yoga. An important part of any activity is feeling comfortable.

With yoga in particular, you will get into different postures, spend some time bent over or even upside down. So having good comfortable clothing is an important part of your practice.

Do you have to have the latest or the flashiest clothes to practice yoga? Oh no. No way. To be honest, there have been times when all of my yoga clothes were in the wash and I wore a tank which I usually wear as my comfy pjs (don't tell anyone) to a Saturday afternoon class.

I felt comfortable, I was covered in all the right spots and I had a great class.

But I do feel my best when I am in yoga clothes that fit me properly and breath. It is not fun to be yanking at a top to move when you move or having a zipper rub when you are in a flow.

Recently, I spoke with Janna Bishop, MEC Active Lifestyle Designer and Janna shared with me some of her top tips on how you too can feel your best and comfortable during a yoga class.

What are the best clothes to wear (for guys and gals) to yoga?

For men and woman you're looking for clothing that allows your body to move through poses without restricting your flow. Clothes that incorporate stretch and are cut close to the body are normally a good option. Good quality yoga apparel should have stretch recovery, meaning the material will bounce back and not bag out after use.

How to ensure that there is the best fit (and nothing is pulling or tugging in the wrong places)?

Try on different sizes and different brands to see what works best for your body. Each brand varies slightly in fit and sizing standards, so take the time to find your perfect match. I'd suggest trying out a couple of your favourite poses to ensure the clothes move with you before taking them to class.

What are the best materials for yoga and why?

If your practice involves getting super sweaty we'd recommend a breathable stretch polyester that wicks sweat away from skin and dries fast. This will help keep you from getting chilly during Shavasana or during the walk home from class. For slower moving practices, a soft cotton or cotton/poly blend t-shirt and tights can be just what you need.

What would be the first items you would buy for yoga?

I would invest in a comfortable pair of tights or shorts and then find a top that suits your yoga style.

Any other tips for yoga wear for guys and gals?

Don't be afraid of layers as you can always adjust your ensemble until you find the right combination. Also, be aware of zippers and other hardware that may dig into your body while in certain poses.

I also previously spoke with Seane Corn, one of the most renowned yoga teachers in the world today and asked her who can do yoga, do you have to be flexible or in great shape to practice?

When I asked what would be Seane's advice to anyone wanting to try yoga for the first time she shared this: "One aspect of the practice of yoga is that it can increase our flexibility, you do not need to be flexible to be in a class. Yoga meets you where you are at. If you want to decrease stress then yoga will meet you there, if you are seeking something else it will meet you there too."

I will continue to practise yoga and will share my experiences. If you have ideas or questions about yoga please leave a comment below and I will do my best to find the answer for you.

Your suggestions are always welcome, as I continue on my journey to enjoy life to the fullest. Let's have the very best 2015!
