Extra! Extra! The Huffington Post Canada Has Arrived

The Huffington Post Canada   First Posted: 05/26/11 09:27 AM ET   Updated: 07/26/11 06:12 AM ET

It's not every day one gets to be the new kid on the block in one's own country. Today, we're excited to enter our new neighbourhood. To many of you who have been visiting The Huffington Post, we hope you like what you see. As Arianna Huffington says in writing about our launch, expect the same look and approach to news and issues, but with a uniquely Canadian spin.

To mark our launch, we asked Toronto-based illustrator Paul Gilligan to capture some of the excitement about what we hope to bring as Canada's Internet Newspaper. As we embark on this new digital adventure and carve out a Canadian identity for the HuffPost, we couldn't help but give a playful nod to some well-loved icons of our homeland. Enjoy the treat and welcome to The Huffington Post Canada.

Re: Cartoon, Part 3/3: ....Aside from the beaver, more evidence that Huffington Post's cartoonists get their notion of what Canada is from our currency, can be seen in the drawing of the ol' Cutty Sark in the background. Because that's the way we ALL travel here in Canada, on our waterways. In old 1800's style sailboats.

There's a queen on the money. What could be more archaic? Is this a democracy? Or just a little provincial place with no population?

" There's a queen on the money. What could be more archaic? "

George Washington on yours. He's older than the queen. Though seeing as how Bush stole his last election, I'm not assuming its a democracy.

Re: Cartoon, Part 2: .....Then you have your token black stereotype character, for how could you depict Canada's multiculturalism WITHOUT a token black woman stereotype? And then you have the indelible image of a beaver. Yes, the ubiquitous beaver, that run free and rampant throughout the urban streets of this great frozen wasteland we call "Canada". Handing out copies of Huffington Post Canada. The Canadian Beaver's best friend, being "Beaver Boy". The common 1930's style 14 year old newsies wearing golf caps that we see all over the place here in Canada. You can spot them just from there cries of "Hear Ye, Eh! Hear Ye, Eh!". Aside from the beaver, more evidence that Huffington Post's cartoonists get their notion of what Canada is.

I love the cartoon announcing the new Forced HuffPost Canada. It neatly depicts in one frame, just about every stupid bogus irrelevant stereotype that Americans have of Canadians. You got your "Jean Guy LaTuque", complete with French moustache and ax-wielding lumberjack outfit (despite that there hasn't been lumberjacks in Quebec since like 150 years). You obviously have to have a hockey player if you're an American depicting Canadians, so there's that. You got your "Bonhomme Carnavale" lurking in the background, since Canada is so widely known around the world for its version of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. Then you have your Royal Canadian Mountie in full red Mountie Garb, which of course every Canadian sees every day on every street corner across Canada. Just doing their job "Keeping Canadians Polite".

My daughter who posts as ElizJohnsonSays moved to Nepean, Canada, from North Carolina with my teenage grandson several months ago, so I shall read Huffington Post Canada with great interest.

hey there fellow Canadian residents.

obviously, they aren't fixing it, so the only thing to do is to boycott.

I will check in next week to see if it is fixed. If not, then a week later. I suggest you all do the same.

Luckily a fellow Canadian user has found a work around which is to use the Colbert Nation's mirror site the ColbuffingtonRe-post: http://www.colbertnation.com/ColbuffingtonRe-post

It does not redirect you to the Canadian site.

Sorry, this site is just creepy. I look to Canadian media outlets for real, unbiased Canadian news (for instance, The CBC). I looked at the Huffington Post for American news. This melding of the two is wrong, and annoying. Canadians like being separate, so bring back huffingtonpost.com please.

Is there an option to toggle the US as default? Rather than having to select the US edition. This is extremely tedious.

No, there isn't. If there was, Huffington Post know they would not get any traffic to their Canadian site.
04:46 PM on 06/05/2011
I find if I toggle to the US edition it still comes back to the Canadian version. If I am on the US version and click business it gives me Canadian business. I have never seen any more intrusive site this this. I have never been not allowed to stay on the US version of something every before. This is something I would expect from the Chinese.

Looking at this space I see ads for America Online TV, CNBC, Bing and stories about Michelle Bachman and Arizona cops. Seriously, with all due respect "Yankee, go home, and take your corporate manifest destiny with you"

Creepy isn't it, and right after a Harper majority?

Canucks are tough when they're in plastic padding. Go Bruins.
06:38 PM on 05/27/2011
Wow. As we watch Stephen "Opy" Harper sell our country out to US interests, and submit our census data to a system designed by the American arms company Lockheed Martin, Arianna Hoffman decides she can make a buck setting up a liberal voice in Canada. What the H double hockey sticks? Why do we even have our own flag? Booooooooo.

Why am I being forced to give hits to the .ca page?? I don't want to support it, yet I am automatically re-directed there. Therefore, my accessing that page is recorded as a hit on their counter and they can now say "See! See how many people like it!" Bull! I do not like having my choices made for me. Go ahead and censor this complaint too I guess, it's pretty obvious you don't really know much, or care much, about your Canadian audience.
02:29 PM on 05/27/2011
I read HuffPost for the US and world news and have a sufficiency of Canadian news where I live. I'll try again using the redirect button but it hasn't worked so far: please fix.

I see my comments criticizing the forcing of HuffPost Canda upon Canadian users have been CENSORED. DELETED, to suppress the truth of and to HuffPost readers.

This is really SICK and APPALING and SHAMEFUL on the part of Huffington Post. There is NOTHING in the guidelines that allows for this.
01:27 PM on 05/27/2011
This same has happened to me. I could not understand how I had violated the blog guidelines so I inquired as to why my posting had been supressed. I have not yet received a response.
10:19 PM on 05/27/2011
Honestly. Arianna, we love watching you play that crazy American political game down south -- it's very entertaining. We don't need both you AND Stephen Harper brining it here.
09:46 PM on 05/27/2011
Same with me.

I only signed up a few days ago and thought I was using some banned words but, nope. I've been reading this site for over two years. I think I have a handle on it. Therefore I've come to the conclusion it's censorship. (or perhaps the fact that i was bashing the PM ?? who knows)

And that's SO Canadian too. Neither Denmark NOR Marmite can be found in CANADA.

Thanks for making the US version available but since many people still cannot find their way it is clear that you need to make the button more obvious. I advise doing this quickly as you are dealing with many frustrated readers at the moment.

You don't understand. They're making it not obvious ON PURPOSE. Otherwise, people won't go to this site if they didn't apply this sort of coersion.
